It's purely personal choice. qinger, since your baby has no problem taking formular, don't rush her/him for solid food.
The goal of adding solid before 1 year old is to train the baby to chew food, not for any nutrition purpose. The major source of nutrition is definitely milk (breast milk or formular). Anything else is only supplemental. Solid food is just for fun at this stage.
Ruby, yes, frozen breast milk tastes terrible. But have you tasted formular? Not any better if not worse. Babies do not have a preference for taste. Their preference is developed subsequently after adding solid food. One side note about feeding previously frozen breast milk to baby: shake rigorously until it's well mixed. Breast milk is not homogenized and will settle into layers.
As for what solid food to add, I echo DeBeers. More conservative is better than any consequence. My mother-in-law didn't believe me when I said "not to add yolk before 9 months" and gave it to my daughter when she's 8 months. She then threw up everything she had and refused to eat anything for a couple of hours. She's almost 1.5 years old now and would not eat any egg -- even a tiny little amount mixed in her favorite rice.
The important thing is to make the baby drink milk, not to make him/her eat solid food. Babies cannot digest solid food or obsorb the nutrition effectively anyway.
