Post by Jun » 2006-09-25 10:54

A bit of warning about Deadwood. Milch has a bit of the machismo previously demonstrated in NYPD Blue and (therefore) a somewhat misogynistic attitude. His contempt for the dandy city man is almost comical.

Are they poking fun at Scientology or promoting it?

Steve Martin wrote and directed a movie before, Bowlfinger or something, that was a satire of scientology (and a few other things) inside Hollywood. Scientology isn't really a big cult, but they promote themselves intensively in Hollywood. A lot of people in show-biz are converts.

The pseudo science-plus-pop psychology-plus-christianity-plus-pseudo eastern philosophy approach adopted by L. Ron Hubbard is not unlike the other Chinese cult with theories about Qigong and wheels and aliens etc. Sometimes I wonder if Li xx based his thing on Hubbard.

well...

spoilers.

it's Kimber. after all the sh*t she's been through, now she finds sth "more compatible with my inner nature", namely Scientology, and becomes much happier. She audited and converted matt, who asked his dads for money to enroll in. Dads are all no-no, but mom is soft hearted and claims "but it helps him!" etc. Very politically correct so far.

Oh but we all know how screwed up Kimber and Matt can be. Remember the "born-again" story line last season?

The only TV series I miss is Rescue Me. The writing is incredible.

Just finished Season 1. I don't know if anybody will heed my enthusiastic, blood-puking recommendation for this series, but just in case you do, do not forget to listen to the commentary for the last episode of the season by the 2 lead actors, Tim Olyphant and Ian McShane. It is hilarious and fantastic. McShane, like a true Brit stage thespian, talks with a flair no American actor can muster. :love011:

(OK I promise I'll let the subject drop for at least the next week.)

Hi, my first post here. :-P

I happened to read a comprehensive article about the writer of Deadwood, David Milch, from the New Yorker back in 2004. OMG, this man is fascinating!

Thanks a lot! Fascinating, but not surprising. Milch could have been as Ivy League and as academic as anyone, but thank God he is not cut out for it. Thank God he found a way to work in television. Writing, especially writing fiction, is to lay bare one's soul. No way around it.

This morning while driving I was thinking about whether Milch is a religious man. The first season contains, among a million other themes, an anguished examination of faith and (the Judeochristian) God. (BTW, he is Jewish, I think.)
