在图书馆偶然看见这个DVD，还是Criterion出的，好奇，遂租来看。黑白片，1945年出的，编导是法国人Jean Cocteau。
第一个发现是Angels in America里面墙上活的浮雕原来是从这里面照抄来的，而且Disney动画片美女和野兽里拟人的茶壶家具也是从这里抄来的。嘿，原来这么经典。
听commentary track，才知道原来这个故事是寓教于乐，教导女孩子包办婚姻的好处。可见古代女孩子虽然没有选择，包办婚姻却也得使劲教育和灌输才行。故事的意思是，虽然你父母命令你嫁的可能是个面目可憎言语无味的野兽，你也不爱他，可是先结婚后恋爱，说不定有一天发现原来他是个王子。嘿，这跟今天的女儿婚嫁教育指导思想没什么不同嘛。。。
这个故事对男读者的迎合就不必说了，但也有吸引女读者的一面。Cocteau在notes里写道：普通人总以为女人看重的是男色，其实她们喜欢追求的是野兽一类的男人，象王子那样的对象，她们从内心里是不感兴趣的。故事结尾美人得到的是个温文尔雅的王子，她问野兽在哪里，真是讽刺。

巧了。我因为<<The Dreamers>>看了个糊涂，去借原著小说<<The Holy Innocents>>,图书馆没有。然后哪里看到Gilbert Adair写此书是向Jean Cocteau的<<The Holy Terribles>>致敬。后者图书馆倒是有，法文版。

这片子我当时在学校电影院看的，生没看出有什么好来，回家之后上网乱查，查出来ebert的影评，有这么一段吓我一哆嗦：

My aim would be to make the Beast so human, so sympathetic, so superior to men, that his transformation into Prince Charming would come as a terrible blow to Beauty, condemning her to a humdrum marriage and future that I summed up in that last sentence of all fairy tales. 太精辟了。让我笑得满地打滚。
